Mark Armstrong

Ever since I was a child I have always like to draw. When I was in high school I was at the top of my art classes. My art teacher said that I should pursue an education in the arts once I graduate high school, so I did. After a year long break working I decided to take Graphic Design at St.Lawrence College and I’m glad I did.

In my eyes, the discipline of Graphic Design combines two of the things that I love most: artistic creation and critical thinking. As designers, we channel our artistic skills into a process of visual communication. It is these visual communication challenges that prompt our imagination and give our creativity structure. To me, Graphic Design is art with a clear purpose.

In the past, I was the Arts Council Co-President at my high school and a photography student at Concordia University. I have always been quite passionate about being a part of the art world and Graphic Design has allowed me to find my place in it. I love working independently as well as in collaboration with others. I love to be challenged and I am interested in working in just about every area design offers.

When I first came out of high school I wasn’t sure what I wanted to pursue. I really enjoyed creating things and photography, but I was worried my skill level wasn’t high enough. With much encouragement from my boyfriend I applied to the program and got accepted! I’m very happy with this decision. I’ve learned so much these past two years and I’m excited for the years to come.

I grew up in a small town and have always had a love of art ever since I was a child; it’s my passion to design and illustrate. All throughout high school I took all art courses and loved making comic books and cartoons. I knew from a very young age that I wanted a career in art, so I applied for Graphic Design to expand my knowledge and I never looked back. I knew I made the right decision coming into this course. It’s challenging but worth it in the end.

I have always had a love for the arts, and since joining this program have further developed that passion into design. With working in a group environment, I have been able to bounce ideas off of my peers, as well as gain valuable skills from my teachers in problem solving and concept development.

Doodling and drawing through my childhood, there is no surprise that I’ve developed a great fondness for Illustration in the program. I love to experiment and explore the ways of incorporating this new found love into my design work. The collaboration of illustration, typography and layout allows me to create solutions to real world problems.

At first I wasn’t sure if this was for me. I had decided to try and go for my other love in like, Vet Tech. However after four years of trying and not getting anywhere I had decided to try my other love, Art. So I took the step and applied for Graphic Design here at SLC. It’s been the best choice I’ve ever made. This school and program is really amazing and challenges me in all the right ways. Truly an amazing experience.

I grew up following the graphic design industry. Seeing what works and what doesn’t. Now that I’m testing the waters for myself, I can see my background coming in handy, but I still have a lot to learn. It has been a handful keeping up with all the talent I’m surrounded with here at SLC, but now I’m done treading water and am on the track to becoming a graphic designer.

I started out as an Advertising student, and it took some time for me to figure out where I really belong. I’ve always loved art and design, but was never sure if it’s what I wanted to do, but now I know for sure. I’ve really enjoyed my experiences so far at SLC, and am excited for the future.

Vanessa Mathieu

March 16, 2015

With my Dad in the military, my family did a lot of moving! But the one thing that didn’t change no matter the place is paper and pencils. I always have been a creative monster growing up and I pretty much did anything art related though out high school. Painting, manga, I did it all!

Graphic Design has a way to bring a diversity of people that have the same passions as you do. I love how design has no borders and is a universal language that we can all relate to. At the end of the day, I love what I do and I wouldn’t change it for anything!

Jessica Mayer

March 16, 2015

I have always had a knack for design and began painting and sketching fashion ware a lot when I was younger. I like modern design because it is always pushing the envelope and I felt like this course had a broad learning outcome that I could use in many career choices. I eventually decided to chose graphic design as a study choice. I love trying different styles and pushing myself to be a better designer.

March 16, 2015

I grew up in a household of graphic designers, so I was raised on loving all things creative. Throughout high school, I took a whole whack of art and design courses from an awesome teacher, who whipped me into shape for anything art related and so I started my journey. I love to illustrate because it gives me the ability to express myself with my own style of art. I look forward to learning lots more at St. Lawrence College!

Devon Rae

March 16, 2015

I am Devon… Devon I am. Growing up I had a very wild imagination that would always get me into trouble. This wild imagination stuck with me all the way into university where spent a lot of time drawing in class. One day during a lecture I was drawing somebody’s coffee cup when I said to my self, “I don’t like studying history… so why am I perusing it?” soon after that I dropped out of university and registered for graphic design at St. Lawrence College, where I am encouraged to draw and to have a wild imagination.

March 16, 2015

I have always had a love for anything to do with the arts but was never sure if I wanted to pursue it as a career. After my first round in college was unsuccessful, I was determined to find something that I would really enjoy. I then came across this Graphic Design program and became very intrigued. Being in my second year I have come to love every aspect of Graphic Design. I have been able to find my strengths, which currently reside in Typography and Illustration, and try to show that in my work.

Now I can honestly say that I am in love with what I am doing and cannot wait for what lies ahead. have learned so many new skills from this program and I cannot imagine myself doing anything else with my life.

Mike Shaw

March 16, 2015

I’ve always been interested in the arts, and felt it was my main focus in life. My passion in music had, strangely enough, lead me to enroll in this program and I’ve felt it was a truly great decision. Being able to express multitudes of ideas through various design techniques and collaborate with other like-minded designers has been an amazing experience thus far. It has given me an invaluable perspective into the realm of design and how it can be a powerful tool within our society to inform, relate or to inspire change.

Joshua Vrooman

March 16, 2015

I have worked as a freelance graphic artist and illustrator for several years, my work has ranged from branding and logos to massive outdoor murals.

Graphic design was just the right thing for me to pursue as it is giving me the technical abilities to do what I was doing with my artistic abilities. It’s a good fusion of illustration and digital manipulation for anyone interested in pursuing a career in art and design.

Jessica Wood

March 16, 2015

Since I was younger I always loved design. I spent all my time in courses like yearbook, photography and technical illustration. I get a lot of my inspiration from music and that has also been a way for me to get my designs out there. I’m always making and designing things for my favourite bands. I took this course to further my design capabilities and to discover more of what I can do. My favourite things in life are music, design, traveling and photography. This is what drives my designs and inspires me with new things.

I began appreciating graphics at a young age. When I was a kid I was jealous of my friends because they were good at drawing, so I taught myself to draw in order to keep up with my friends. At that time I was also writing stories online using basic html to change the sizes and colours of my type. Eventually this lead me to build web-pages so my friends and I could exchange artwork and stories with each other. My knowledge and skill set grew when I began using more advanced software for a few different courses in high school such as communication technology and digital media. I chose to further my education through graphic design because it encompassed everything I was already experimenting with as hobbies in a professional, refined way.
